Lilac Festival, Pine Mountain Club    May 18-19, 2013

Take a typical southern California spring weekend in May, add tall trees, snow-streaked mountain peaks, blue sky and pine-scented air, and you have the beginnings of a recipe for Family Fun.
Begun in 1982 as a way to forget winter and welcome the approaching summer, the Lilac Festival started as little more than a bake sale and a Maypole Dance, and has grown into a full-fledged Mountain tradition. The Lilac was chosen as a centerpiece for the Festival because it thrives in our mountain climate, and its short flowering season falls roughly at the same time as the Festival. The powerful scent of lilacs is one of the few that outshines the always-present scent of sugar pine.
This year’s Festival is Saturday & Sunday, May 18th & 19th, and begins at 9 am each day, and ends at 5pm or so. The traditional Parade is at 11 am on Saturday. Over 100 Arts & Crafts booths will be open all day, along with international food vendors, restaurants and unique shops, live music throughout the Festival, and a kiddie amusement area. There are also lots of places to sit, relax, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Village and all of Pine Mountain Club. For a truly breathtaking view, helicopter rides will available, too.

Angelina Jolie Reveals She Had Double Mastectomy

Angelina Jolie has revealed that she underwent a double mastectomy after learning that she carried a gene that dramatically increased her risk of getting breast cancer.
In an op-ed piece for the New York Times titled "My Medical Choice," the 37-year-old actress opened up about the reasons for her decision.
Because she carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, "My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman."
Her own mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56, before the birth of Jolie's twins Knox and Vivienne.
Jolie wrote that the operation made it easier to reassure her family (she and partner Brad Pitt have six children together), that she wouldn't suffer a similar fate.
"We often speak of “Mommy’s mommy,” and I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same could happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a “faulty” gene."
Jolie goes on to give a step-by-step description of the treatment process - from surgery to remove the breast tissue to reconstructive surgery and implants.
While she kept silent for the duration of the procedure, she explained that she was choosing to share her story now in an effort to inspire other women affected by the disease.
"Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action."
Breast cancer kills an estimated 458,000 people each year, according to the World Health Organization.
While the decision to undergo a preventative mastectomy would be difficult for anyone, it's almost impossible to imagine how challenging it must have been for a woman who has (at least partly) made her living on her looks.
But Jolie dismisses those concerns, writing "I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity." She also gave thanks for the love and support of Pitt, who was at her side for "every minute of the surgeries."
I think that if I took the test and were over 80 percent risk, and knew that I was giving myself a better chance of being there for my own child's high school graduation, wedding, the birth of my first grandchild, I would do it without hesitation.
What do you think? Have you ever considered being tested for the BRCA genes? Would you ever undergo a preventative mastectomy?

Are kids getting enough sleep?

Is your little one getting enough shut-eye? According the sleep experts, the answer is probably no.
After reviewing 100+ years of studies about children and sleep -- more than 300 of them -- University of South Australian researchers determined that sleep experts have consistently found that children got less sleep than recommended, Time Magazine reported.
“Over the 112 years the study covered, children lost about 75 minutes of shut-eye,” Time’s Bonnie Rochman wrote of the new study inPediatrics, “in 1897, experts were recommending that kids sleep 1 hr. 15 min. more than was advised in 2009.”
“Another constant,” Rochman added, “societal hand-wringing over children’s lack of sleep and a tendency to blame the hectic pace of modern life.” One of the study’s authors said, “People are always recommending kids sleep more than they do.”
So what's the current recommended amount of sleep time for children?
It varies based on age, but according to the National Sleep Foundation babies between the ages of 3 to 11 months need a total of 14 to 15 hours, while toddlers between 1 to 3 years old should get 12 to 14 hours. Preschoolers need 11 to 13 hours, and elementary schoolers should sleep between 10 to 11 hours. Older children and teens need a minimum of 8½ hours.
How many hours of sleep do your kids normally get?
